Follow these two neighbors as they discuss the ins and outs of selling their homes on their own.

Historically, agents made money when they sold your house. Traditional real estate commission is a percentage of the selling price – usually 5 or 6 per cent. When you sell your house privately, you won’t need to pay any selling agent commission. That gives you more options for pricing your house. You could price it the same as a house being sold through an agent and keep more money.

The other consideration is how fast you want to sell your house. Listing it with an agent means having to add their commission into the gross price of the house to ensure that you get the net amount out of the sale that you want. This increases the price of your house which could reduce the number of interested buyers. Selling your house privately allows you the option of reducing the asking price by the amount of selling agent commission to gain an advantage over the other homes for sale by agents.
